What is Ultrasonic Scaling?

Ultrasonic scaling uses a fine instrument that vibrates at ultrasonic frequency, together with a gentle water spray, to break up hard tartar and flush away plaque and bacteria. It removes heavy, stubborn deposits faster and more thoroughly than hand instruments alone, including just below the gum line.

It is the preferred choice for heavy tartar, heavy staining and early gum disease. At Maa Dental Care, ultrasonic scaling is followed by polishing, leaving your teeth smooth and clean and giving your gums the best chance to heal.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between normal and ultrasonic scaling?
Normal scaling removes light deposits, mainly with hand instruments. Ultrasonic scaling uses vibration and a water spray to remove heavy, hard tartar more quickly and thoroughly, which makes it better for heavy build-up and early gum disease.
Is ultrasonic scaling safe for my enamel?
Yes. When performed by a trained dentist, ultrasonic scaling removes only tartar and plaque — it does not damage healthy enamel.
Will my gums bleed during the cleaning?
Some bleeding is common when the gums are already inflamed. It usually reduces within a few days as the gums heal after the tartar is removed.
How long do the results last?
With proper brushing, flossing and a cleaning visit every 6 months, your teeth and gums stay healthy much longer. Tobacco use makes tartar and stains return faster.
